Commission

I have always been willing to paint or draw to commission although until now I haven't advertised the fact as I have always preferred the freedom of creativity which my own ideas provide. However more and more people ask if I can provide this service, so I have decided to offer commissions now exclusively from the Mighty Fine Art website.

A commisioned artwork can be a very special treat for yourself or a thrilling gift for a person to recieve upon their retirement, wedding, birthday etc. A one off, unique portrait of a person, pet or a place which is particularly special to you or the recipient. For example, perhaps there is a grandparent or parent who's memory you would like to keep alive but all you have are a few crumpled old photos tucked away in an album. I can take one of those photos and create a portrait you will be proud to have on your wall and which will be something to pass on to future generations.

Another popular idea is to send a photograph and have me transform the subject into a Native American Indian or perhaps a mountain man, the possibilities are endless.

On this page I have provided all that I think you will need to know before commissioning your artwork, such as some guidelines for producing the source material for me to work from etc. Just email if you have other questions.

I will work exclusively from photographs to create your picture. These need to be of as good a quality as you can provide and a minimum size of 8 x 5 inches. The more information I can gain from them, the more life-like and accurate your portrait will be. Digital photographs can be emailed to me at the best resolution you have. If you only have prints then they can be scanned and emailed to me, or if you prefer you can post them to my address. I will care for and return any original photographs to you but can't accept responsibility if they are lost or damaged in the post, so ensure they are packaged adequately.

You can use the form at the bottom of this page to email an image to me. Maximum size is 5mb.

Please ensure that there are no copyright issues with any photographs you send to me.

Source Material

If it is a portrait you require, for best results try to take your photograph at or around eye level. Focus should be on the eyes and if taken from a slight angle will give a better portrait rather than face on where features can look a little distorted, particularly with a long nosed animal such as a pony or my Murphy pictured here.

Ordering and Timescale

For a full body image, something like this shot of Murphy is ideal. Again taken at around eye level and with enough light on him to show his markings and the way his coat lies, but not too much light that detail is bleached out.

More often than not I will be sent an image like this. This is fine if sharp enough. Remember, it is only the subject that is important. He can be isolated from anything in the background, so for instance I could have him in this pose but lying on the grass or the beach, whatever you want.

I will need to see your reference photographs first, to ensure they are of sufficient quality for me to work from.

If all's well then I will require a 30% deposit before I begin your commission. From this point it should take between 1-2 weeks for completion. Once completed I will email an image for you to see along with a final invoice. If you are satisfied with what I have created then upon receipt of the remainder of my fee your artwork will be posted to you. If ordering for a special occasion then please give plenty of notice to avoid disappointment.

Pricing

Prices will be estimated for each commission and will depend on the size required, medium, type of subject and how many subjects are to be in the composition. As a rough guide prices start at about £120 for an 8 x 12 inch pencil portrait of a single subject, rising to £250 for a larger watercolour painting and perhaps more for multiple subjects, email me details of what you have in mind and I will reply as soon as possible with a quote.

Your artwork will be sent to you bevel mounted with a backing board, then wrapped in cellophane for protection.

It would be advisable to have your artwork framed professionally as soon as possible to ensure archival quality and make sure your artwork lasts for generations to come.

I accept payment by cheque, made payable to Peter Williams and posted to the address on my 'Contact' page. Or you can pay by credit/debit card via paypal. I will send a paypal invoice if you wish to pay by this method.
