Swallow Bird

As some may know, one of my guilty pleasures is Westerns and anything Native American. I also have a favourite Western artist called JD Challenger (google him) So I've created this mixed media piece in the style of JD Challenger, based on an old black and white photo of a Crow man named 'Swallow Bird', taken at the turn of the last century by Edward Curtis. I have painted pieces in this style before, but not for a good few years.

For this one I've applied a little Daniel Smith ground to texture my watercolour paper and used predominantly gouache paints as well as my Daniel Smith watercolours, both transparent and some metallic. I've also randomly applied some copper leaf into the background.

Due to the rich pigment content of the gouache and the metal leaf, this painting really glows and sparkles when there is a bit of light shining on it. Measuring about 8.5 x 10.5 inches, I've chosen a black mount which makes the colours pop even more, and framed it in a complimentary mottled silver frame with black sides to a total size of 14.5 x 16.5, ready to hang. Great to hang in a study or den if you are a fan of the Western genre.
